CENTRAL VIRGINIA – Voters around the Commonwealth are taking time away from their lunch breaks or adding a few minutes to their morning and evening commute to head to the polls as part of the Republican and Democratic Primaries Tuesday.

Virginia is among 13 states where voters are deciding who they think should represent the Republican and Democratic party in the November 2016 General Election via primaries and caucuses.

In total, over 1,450 delegates are on the line in Super Tuesday voting, with 865 for Democrats and 595 for Republicans and those results will begin filtering in from around the Commonwealth at 7 p.m. once polls close. Specifically in Virginia, 95 delegates are up for grabs for Democratic candidates Hilary Clinton and Bernie Sanders while Republican candidates Dr. Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, John Katich, Marco Rubio and Donald Trump will be vying for Virginia’s 95 delegates.

According to polling officials in Dinwiddie at the Nazomine Volunteer Fire Station, turnout had been slow leading up to the noon hour Tuesday but, they have all hands on deck and are ready for increased traffic during peak times, which are usually during the evening commute as voters are getting off work.

In Prince George, as of noon, approximately 14 percent of voters had made their way through the Richard Bland polling place at the campus’ Barn Theatre, according to the site’s election chief.

A visit to Petersburg’s Old Town Train Station polling place yielded no information as the election chief  at the site declined to comment on voter turnout at the site.

According to the Virginia Department of Elections, during the 2008 February Democratic & Republican Presidential Primaries, just under 32 percent of the total voters in the state voted in the primaries. At that time, John McCain won 50 percent of the vote for Republicans while, then Senator, Barack Obama won 63 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary, besting Clinton by over 278,000 votes.

These results will be updated as we receive numbers from the Virginia Department of Elections. Refresh the page throughout the night for the latest information.
